Craft Show Pictures, Post Schedule and A Lovely Review

Hello!

It is snowing here. Stanley is itching to get outside to play while I am perfectly happy to stay warm inside our home.

Neighbor Girl did a lovely job at the craft show this weekend. She set up the stand with her mother and I heard she did a great job of handing out our bookmarks for us as well. Way to go, Neighbor Girl! Click here to view all of the pictures from the craft show. She shared with us that many children made puppets of Stanley and me when they stopped by the area. How fun!

Mr. Jeff W. was the lucky winner of the iTunes Gift Card. Congratulations, Mr. Jeff!

Welcome to our new subscribers! We are happy to have you join us. We do post daily on our Facebook page but to keep your inbox less cluttered, we try to post the really important announcements here on our blog.

Facebook has this schedule:
Monday - Katrina shares a word that she likes with her Word of the Week post.
Tuesday - We share a favorite quote.
Wednesday - Stanley shares a fun animal fact. Cool Mom sometimes reviews books, on our blog.
Thursday - Zorg teaches us a lesson about aliens.
Friday - We put all of these neatly in a post on right here on our blog, so those of you who are not on Facebook will be caught up!

We recently received this lovely review from Miss Jemima Pett. She has the most adorable guinea pigs and writes about their adventures! Cool Mom will be posting a review of her book shortly. Thank you, Jemima for your kind words. Oh, and guess what? Our book will be part of a giveaway she is having in April! Stay tuned for more on that.

Ooooo, Stanley just went outside, so it is time for me to grab a seat at the window for his snow time show. Then I will take a well-earned nap. Have a lovely day and thank you for stopping by.

Book Review: Fantastic Picture Book with Giveaway!!!

Title: And He Puffed
An inflated story of the Three Little Pigs

Authors : Larry Moss & Kelly Cheatle

Publisher: Limited Kickstarter Edition

Year Published: 2013
Description (from back cover): Squeal with delight at a classic tale! Artists Larry Moss & Kelly Cheatle breathe new life into the story of the Three Little Pigs with their unique balloon illustrations. Follow the pigs as they work together to learn the merits of a job well done.

Review:
First, I need to come clean. I am a recovering balloon artist. It isn't like I need to attend meetings or anything but there are days where  I miss creating amazing things out of a piece of latex. Sound crazy? Yep. I've been called that before. No biggie. ANYWAY... almost two years ago, Larry Moss and Kelly Cheatle created the Once Upon a Time Kickstarter Project. I happily became one of their sponsors. Take a visit to their site to witness what motivated me at the time.

Great news! The project was fully funded and just this month, I received my two copies of their  limited Kickstarter edition book, "And He Puffed." The artistry in the illustrations (do I call them that?) are mind-blowing. My favorite detail is the varied expressions of the pigs throughout the story. The mix of balloons and computer graphic backgrounds make a perfect combination.

We all know the story, so there are no major surprises there. However, this story leaves out the chimney descent and rids the pigs of the wolf in a more fitting manner. The text works very well with narration and rhyming dialogue from the characters.

Below is our favorite page (excuse my poor camera quality).

Actually, my daughter picked these pages out right away as her favorites. I was surprised at first, but then noting the details in this page, I understood. The little houses are teeny tiny balloons inflated with just enough air to pump them up a tad. Beautiful work.

A few of my daughter's friends were over this week and all were drawn to the book just by seeing the cover.

This fun and beautiful picture book easily gets 5 stars out of 5 balloontastic stars from me and I am thrilled to have a copy to give away to one lucky reader. (See below)

Read? Yes.

Ages? All ages.

Where to Purchase the Book: This is the unfortunate part. You cannot purchase this book as of right now. The authors are in talks with publishers and until a deal is worked out, the only copies of this book are the 100 limited edition Kickstarter copies that were made. The super cool news is that yours truly has TWO of these limited edition copies and I'm giving one of them away right here. This is a signed copy of And He Puffed and is open to US and Canadian residents. Yay!!!  Join the rafflecopter giveaway below to participate.

Notes: Be sure to visit their website to see the amazing projects they have led and to read about where else you may have seen their work. How many people are able to boast about appearing at the White House, doing a Tedx talk and being a Guinness World Record holder? Mr. Moss can.

Official Disclosure: I received these Limited Kickstarter Edition copes of And He Puffed from backing the Once Upon a Time project.  I received no monetary or in-kind compensation for my honest review.

The Reviewer: Hi! I am a homeschooling mother to one precocious tween daughter. Most of my reading consists of preparatory reading for upcoming history, math, science, geography, literature, (you get the idea) lessons. However, sometimes I am lucky enough to fit in a book just for fun and will review these "fun" books for my dear friends, Stanley and Katrina von Cat the Master of Wisdom and Knowledge. Book Review: Equestrian Mystery Book for All Ages

Hello, my human friend!
Quicksand - The Mysterious Disappearance of Dakotaroo (The Adventures of Dakotaroo)
Thanks to Cool Mom for providing us with another guest book review post.

~Katrina von Cat the Master of Wisdom and Knowledge (and Stanley)

Title: Quicksand - The Mysterious Disappearance of Dakotaroo

Series: The Adventures of Dakotaroo

Author : Krista Michelle Breen

Publisher: Groundskeeper's Cottage Press

Year Published: 2012
Description (from Amazon): The first in Krista Michelle Breen's bestselling Canadian series, T.J. Thompson's world gets thrown upside down when her beloved Appaloosa Dakotaroo mysteriously disappears into the fog.

Review:
Quicksand: The Mysterious Disappearance of Dakotaroo is a fun and easy read. Horse lovers will fall in love with this series. Those of you unfamiliar with the equestrian terms used throughout the story, this book will give you a great jumping off point for learning about the life of an equestrian. For me, it brought me back to my teenage years of horseback riding.

T.J. and her horse, Dakotaroo (Roo), have a touchingly close bond. When Roo disappears one  foggy morning, T. J. is forced to face the fact that her horse has been stolen.

Just when you think the story is about to wrap up, a whole new adventure begins! When T.J. eventually finds Dakotaroo, she begins to wonder if bringing her stolen horse home right away is the best course of action. What? Is she crazy? Maybe not. Mickey Skyhouse, a boy with a sad back story changes T.J.'s tune a bit. Yep, just a teeny tiny hint of romance, nothing more.

T.J., her best friend Arienne and Mickey prove to be a productive team in the end.

I happily give this book five stars out of five.

On a non-book note, I adore Krista's blog. Just take a look at 25 Nerdy Things About Krista and  Dead Dog Township(It's Kinda Famous). Fun information!

Clean Read? Yes.

Ages? 8+ independently. Younger ages may enjoy being read this story.

Title: Escape from the Forbidden Planet

Author : Julie Anne Grasso

Illustrator: David Blackwell

Year Published: 2012
Description (from Amazon): Caramel Cinnamon thought the worst day of her life was the day her grandparents, the King and Queen of the Elves of Cardamom went missing. She was wrong! The day she spills sticky toffee syrup onto her father's computer, that's when her worst nightmare begins. She finds herself marooned on a forbidden planet, sent there by an evil clone with a very sticky secret. Caramel is desperate to escape. If she doesn't she will lose her dreams of returning to Cardamom to become a healer like her Mum. Luckily, she has a secret of her own and the lives of her family and friends depend on it!

Suitable for children aged 9-12

Review:
An accident as a child leaves Caramel Cinnamon, of the planet Cardamom, with a bad leg that continually chips away her confidence. Caramel is forced into an adventure that takes her to a forbidden planet. We cheer for her as her confidence builds while she and her new friends find a way to assist Caramel's family - and the Universe.

I really enjoyed this book. It is a super fun read and even more importantly (as a mother) a clean read. I admit it took me a few chapters to become familiar enough with the science fiction/fantasy lingo to follow it easily but once I had that in my head, the book had my interest and it never lost it. Escape from the Forbidden Planet is truly an entertaining book.

Caramel is a lovely character who discovers amazing qualities in herself. Learning to trust them is her biggest challenge and when she does, really cool things happen.
I found myself chuckling at Alexander222 and his helper "Lex" as Alexander worked to gain the attention of the Clone Council to make himself known on his planet, Ishqwartz.

I give Escape from the Forbidden Planet  four stars out of five. It is a great read; extremely creative and leaves you hungry for both food and more of Julie Grasso's story.

I purchased this as an e-book but may have to buy the print version for our home shelves - I am still partial to print books.

Overall, nicely done Julie for creating a fun and creative book that I have no doubts my 9 year-old precocious daughter will enjoy AND that I will give to her without hesitation to read.

Clean Read? Yes.

Ages: The Amazon description states "Suitable for children aged 9-12." I would venture to guess that younger children would enjoy having this book read to them.

Where to Purchase the Book: Great news! Escape from the Forbidden Planet is currently available for FREE on Amazon today AND tomorrow (March 6 & March 7, 2013). Hop on over right now to download your own copy of this book. This book also is only 99 cents after the promotion. A fantastic value!
